Dating back to 1792 and the days of Simon van der Stel, this area was originally farmland and is still home to the Tokai Manor House Situated in Constantia Valley, with a mountain backdrop and vineyards within close proximity, this area encompasses Tokai, Swaanswyk and the exclusive Steenberg and Silvertree Estates. This rural niche area has grown extensively in the past five years and is now known as one of the fastest growing areas in the Valley. It boasts the lowest crime rate in the Southern Suburbs and Swaanswyk, has been quoted as the sixth most expensive real estate in the country.

Tokai offers a 24 hour medical centre, an exclusive wellness centre, numerous excellent restaurants, horse riding and stabling, and superb bed & breakfast and guest houses not to mention the choice of two superb golf courses (Steenberg and Westlake).

Mountain biking, walking and mushroom-picking are all activities tat attract nature lovers and can be enjoyed in the Tokai Forest. The Tokai Forest Arboretum, established in 1885, is a national monument and has a variety of tress including large Californian Redwoods and Oaks. A fairly steep walk to Elephants Eye Cave on the mountain is well woirth the effort for the panoramic views it affords.
