In 1683 Gouvernor Simon van der Stel was honoured with some land of the Dutsch-Eastindinan Trading Company. He called it Constantia. Until 1695 they grew 8,400 trees, various fruit and banana, olive trees and grapes. |

Later these 800 ha were not sufficient any more, so he bought some neighbour farms to expand. With the years Constantia became world famous for it’s wine, and even noble european houses liked his wine. By the way, one of the biggest fans was Otto von Bismarck. Four years after his death, his farm was split in Groot Constantia, Small Constantia and Buitenverwachting. |

Groot Constantia The property is equipped with exquisite antique furniture. Visit the museum or the historic manor-house. Once per hour they offer wine cellar tours. On top of the wine farm they recently opened a restaurant: „Simon’s“. Be surprises, what they did with the old tavern. We enjoy it very much! |

Buitenverwachting Beyond all imagination – so tells us the Afrikaas name – is the quality of these wines. The majestic oak alley, the delicious restaurant (one of the Top 10 in South Africa) and the old manor-house might impress. If you come here for lunch, you should try the legendary „Picknick-Lunch“ below the shady oaks. Phone 021-794519 Klein Constantia After separating Constantia in 1716, this part has established for it’s white wines, especially the sweet ones, which South Africans prefer as desert wines. Groot Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Constantia Uitsig and Steenberg are only a few minutes away from each other. Everywhere around you have the chance to try and buy wines or to enjoy yourself in excellent restaurants. For those who don’t find the time to visit all of the wine farms, there is a wine shop in Constantia Uitsig with a wide range of local wines. Uitsig Wonderful wine farm between Constantia & Tokai. We love it, because of it’s fantastic restaurant. Close to the entrance there is the „River Cafe“. A perfect place for having breakfast or lunch (closed at night). Nearby you’ll find a big wine store. Further on, in the estate there ist two more top-restaurants. The „Uitsig Mediterran“ and the „La Colombe“. Please make a reservation in advance. |
